Tullow looking to expand production off Ghana after Jubilee

  • Tullow Oil PLC outlined its plans to boost oil and natural gas production off Ghana once the West African nation initiates oil production by bringing Jubilee field on stream by yearend, the company said in an interim management statement posted on its web site on Nov. 10.

The 2007 Jubilee discovery in the Gulf of Guinea is scheduled to come on stream in early December with anticipated initial production capacity of 50,000 b/d, said London-based Tullow, which operates Jubilee. Tullow expects production could reach 120,000 b/d in 3-6 months.

“Excellent progress has been made on the Jubilee development in the second half of 2010, including the commissioning, testing, and final installation work,” on the floating production, storage, and offloading vessel and the completion of four development wells, Tullow said.

Tullow also said it was encouraged by the results of a sidetrack to the Owo discovery on the Deepwater Tano block, 37 miles offshore and 19 miles west of Jubilee field.

The sidetrack, drilled in September, confirmed Owo potentially could be Africa’s largest oil discovery since Jubilee, said Tullow, the operator. It expects to start a three-well Owo program in November to appraise Owo and the adjacent Tweneboa oil and gas-condensate accumulations.

The sidetrack "significantly extended the column of high-quality light oil discovered," said Tullow, which reported the discovery well cut 174 ft of net oil pay in two Turonian-age zones of high-quality stacked reservoir sandstones.

The sidetrack, 0.4 mile east of the discovery well, encountered a total net pay section of 115 ft, including 52 ft of net oil pay in the lower part of the Owo channel system, according to Kosmos Energy LLC of Dallas, a partner (OGJ, Sept. 20, 2010, Newsletter).

Development studies are under way for Owo and Tweneboa fields, where Tullow said it hopes to start development in 2012. The Tweneboa-1 exploration well off Ghana cut 70 ft of pay in a light hydrocarbon accumulation in sands of similar age as those in Jubilee field to the east.

Tweneboa-1, in 3,770 ft of water on the Deepwater Tano license, was drilled, logged, and cased to 11,790 ft. It is to be deepened to more than 13,000 ft. Tweneboa is in the Tano basin 16 miles west of Jubilee field (see map, OGJ, Feb. 9, 2008, p. 38).

Kosmos Energy, operator of the West Cape Three Points Block, has submitted a declaration of commerciality to Ghana for the southeast Jubilee area. It plans to submit a development plan in February 2011. Standalone and Jubilee tie-back options are being considered, Tullow said.

On the Deepwater Tano license, the Onyina-1 well was drilled during October to explore a prospect in a secondary Campanian play between Tweneboa and Jubilee fields. Onyina-1 intersected good quality sandstone reservoirs, but they were water bearing, Tullow said.

An exploration drilling campaign is scheduled to start during December on the West Cape Three Points Block, beginning with the Teak prospect, Tullow said. The recent Odum and Mahogany Deep discoveries are on the West Cape Three Points Block.

Deepwater Tano interests are Tullow Ghana Ltd. operator with 49.95%, Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Kosmos Energy 18% each, Sabre Oil & Gas 4.05%, and Ghana National Petroleum Corp. a 10% carried interest.

Interests in West Cape Three Points are Kosmos Energy operator with 30.875%, Tullow 22.896%, K G Group of Ghana 3.5%, Sabre 1.854%, and GNPC 10% carried.
