The Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the oil and gas sector has commended the oil and gas exploration and production companies for heeding to the safety and security measures of the industry.
He said this in an interview on Tuesday 23rd August, 2016 when he asked about the security and safety of one of Ghana’s revenue generating source. He commented that “there have not been any accident so far in the oil and gas industry since Ghana started production of oil from the jubilee field”. He added that, “the oil production companies have putting measures in place to curtail any accidents in the oil and gas industry ad this needs to be commendable”.
No matter who you are, you have to go through some safety procedures before you are allowed to go to off-shore for work or inspections. Sometimes, you can spend one (1) hour filing forms on safety issues before the oil company allows you to come around for inspection. This tells you important safety issues and concerns are to this companies” he added.
Even though there have been negative social impacts of the oil exploration and production in the Western region and the six coastal districts such as increase in accommodation prices, food prices et cetera, the environment has not been negatively affected.
In conclusion, the Jubilee oil field will continue to generate more revenue for the country when the safety concerns and measures are put in place to forestall unforeseen occurrences. Employees should continue to adhere to safety rules and regulations to ensure their security as well as the security of the oil field.
