Business consultant Dr Ishmael Yamson has bemoaned Ghana’s slow economic growth and lamented the inability of leaders to use the discovery of oil and other resources to transform the country.
“We have had oil since 2011 and we thought that opportunity would change this country much greater than we ever thought. On the contrary, having oil doesn’t seem to change our lives, so, my question is: ‘What is preventing us to break though?’” he asked.
In an interview on Wednesday, May 31 with Class91.3FM’s Benjamin Akakpo on the sidelines of the annual Business Roundtable of Ishmael Yamson and Associates, Dr Yamson emphasised that it was time leaders thought entrepreneurially to transform the economy.
“Policy makers are key to the progress of this country and if they are not entrepreneurial in their thinking, we cannot be entrepreneurial as a country and Ghana cannot succeed unless government, administration, public sector, companies, etc. all understand what it means to be entrepreneurial.”
He said people who are entrepreneurial “have vision and foresight and can pick opportunities as well as risks” and utilise the opportunities and avoid major risks.
“As a country, there are so many risks that we see but what are we doing about them? And how are we utilising the opportunities?” he wondered.
The programme is meant to explore how Ghana can become prosperous.
Speakers at the event used the opportunity to examine how government, policy makers, regulators, and the public sector can become entrepreneurial in their approach to the business of government and how they can, through the creation of a sustained enabling operating environment, effectively facilitate entrepreneurship by the private sector, the social sector, and other stakeholder institutions in Ghana.
It also provided the opportunity for all stakeholders to examine how they could become more entrepreneurial, more agile, and be better able to assess risks, competitively leverage opportunities in the environment, and become less dependent on political patronage.
Speakers at the event include a former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei; businessman Dr Daniel Mackorley, founder and leader of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Dr Mensa Otabil; Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, CEO of Dream Oval Derrydean Dadzie, and a host of other distinguished persons.
Class91.3FM is the sole media partner for the event.
