Newmont Ghana and the Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMWU) are heading to the National Labour Commission after negotiations between the two over conditions of service and collective agreements failed.

The two last month announced they had resumed negotiations on their salary and collective agreements after earlier negotiations came to a halt.Prior to that announcement GMWU had threatened to strike if a meaningful response from the mining firm on ongoing negotiations was not received.

Negotiations for better pay between the two have been ongoing for over eight months.

However Newmont in a press statement released yesterday said they, together with the mine workers union are heading to the National Labour Commission (NLA) for mediation because the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on the matter.

According to Newmont Ghana the Ghana Mineworkers Union must corporate to help reach a mutually beneficial, equitable and economically sustainable labour agreement, given the challenging business conditions the company and gold mining industry face.
