New gas contract to check inconsistent gas supply
Government has signed an agreement with the West African Gas Company for the supply of gas to power some thermal plants at the Tema Power enclave.
The decision, according to Power Minister, Dr. Kwabena Donkor is to ensure constant supply of gas to the power plants. The move which will be completed after parliamentary approval will also help secure an alternative following the erratic supply of gas from Nigeria. The company is expected to produce 120 million standard cubic meters for thermal generation.
Dr. Kwabena disclosed this when he addressed journalists after touring the Sunon Asogli Power Company.
“We appreciate the challenges we have had with gas supply and therefore the state has made additional effort to contract LNG. We’ve received executive approval for LNG so subject to Parliamentary approval, we should have LNG in situ within five months so that will serve as a back up to the occasionally erratic supply of gas to the West African gas pipeline,” he said.
Dr. Donkor added, “We are taking measures to ensure that when this plant is up it will run and do so consistently because it will have back up fuel which will be LNG. The capacity is minimum 120 standard cubic feet a day.”
