The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) emerged winner at this year’s Standard Chartered Trophy 2016 tournament held at the Lizzy Sports Complex at East Legon on Saturday 12th March 2016.
GNPC beat Multimedia Company Limited 3-1 to be crowned champions and will join nine other teams at the SC Trophy Finals in Anfield, the home grounds of Liverpool FC in England.
The five-a-side football competition forms part of the annual Standard Chartered Road to Anfield Tournament organised worldwide. The programme provides local markets with a platform to actively engage its clients, staff, and stakeholders.
The tournament, which is linked to the bank’s sponsorship of Liverpool FC, offers an all-expenses-paid trip to winners to have an opportunity to visit Anfield in April 2016 for the world edition.
Winners will join other teams to play in a ten-team tournament to determine which team emerges as the best globally for a particular year.
Former Liverpool FC player John Barnes, who was the special guest at this year’s tournament, charged the team from GNPC to become the first African side to win the competition when they represent Ghana at the world event.
Together with Ghana, Kenya is the only other African country that qualified to playing at the international tournament.
As part of the programme, John Barnes also held a soccer clinic for children at the Mamprobi Cluster of Schools, Dzorwulu Special School, and clients and staff of the bank.
Standard Chartered has been the main sponsor of Liverpool FC in the English Premier League since 2010.
