  • Ghana’s offshore keeps on giving, as Teak prospect shows high-quality oil and gas in a new exploration play

THE companies exploring Ghana’s western offshore can barely believe their good fortune: two months after the Jubilee field started flowing, a well drilled into a structure close by has made a highly promising discovery in a new geological play. The Teak-1 well, drilled by Kosmos, with Anadarko and Tullow as the larger participants, found oil, gas and condensate in five reservoirs, one of which could have an area of 50 square km.

Teak-1 hit a net 73 metres of pay, of which 26 metres hold oil and 47 metres hold gas and condensate. Three reservoirs were found in Turonian rocks – similar to Jubilee – but two were in shallower Campanian rocks, which "potentially opens a new exploration play", Kosmos said. Samples showed oil of 40°API in the Campanian reservoirs and 32°API in the Turonian reservoirs.
