A Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has stressed the need for a new FPSO to compliment production and recent discoveries of oil and gas.
After its commissioning in November 2010, the jubilee partners envisaged the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah to produce in excess of 120,000 barrels of oil per day, however recent figures indicates that the jubilee field produces a little over GH 110, 000 bopd.
Though The FPSO is designed to remain on the field for up to 20 years, Dr Steven Donyina told Citi Business News, recent discoveries offshore has necessitated the need for a new FPSO in Ghana to among other things boost local content in the industry.
He said: “There are other oil field discovered and we are working towards another FPSO but as to whether it is reliable in Ghana is what I don’t know. People who were talking about the assembly over another FPSO but according to the Jubilee partners, especially Tullow, they claim that Ghana hasn’t got the expertise for assembling the FPSO here so we may have to rely on Angola who are far ahead of us in that technology.”
Advised that Ghanaians must start “manufacturing certain parts…definitely we need another FPSO but it may not be assembled in Ghana; it may be assembled somewhere aboard as it was done in Singapore.”
“The Jubilee partners; the people to whom it is benefiting, those who are using it; other governments cannot come here and say do it here. They have to rely on standards and perfection,” he added.
