President John Dramani Mahama has said that the sustainability of the country’s energy is linked to the Gas Infrastructure Project located at Atuabo.
He said a lot of gas had been discovered on the Jubilee Oil Fields which would ensure constant generation of power for the country.
President Mahama said this when he inspected work on the early phase of the Gas Infrastructure Project at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District in the Western Region yesterday.
The project, which is being executed by a Chinese company, Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation, has three major sections, comprising an offshore shallow water pipeline, a gas processing plant (GPP) and onshore pipelines.
The project, to be completed by the end of this year, is expected to treat raw gas from the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah to the fuel grade for the power plant to boost the nation’s electrical power supply by 1,000 megawatts and produce valuable by-products such as LPG and condensate (an additional income of approximately US$ 300 million per year).
President Mahama explained that when the Akosombo Dam was completed, it was producing more that 900 megawatts of power but the country’s power requirement at that time was not up to 100 megawatts and that the country was exporting power to some neighbouring countries.
Now, he said, the country’s energy requirement had increased astronomically between seven and 10 per cent a year.
He said with the planning put in place by the government, the country would not be plunged into darkness again when all those projects came on stream.
President Mahama said the country lost 300 megawatts of power as a result of the breakdown of the West African Gas Pipeline and that the government had been able to reduce the 300 megawatts deficit to 80 megawatts.
The President thanked the chiefs and people of Nzemaland for the support being given to the government to finish the gas processing plant.
He said the facility would influence the lives of people in Nzemaland, particularly those living near the facility, through the creation of jobs, as well as infrastructure development.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company, Dr George Sipa Yankey, said the laying of the 45-kilometre offshore pipeline had been completed, while the laying of more than 110 kilometres of onshore pipelines from Atuabo to the Aboadze Thermal Power Station was progressing steadily.
